OATD.org aims to be the best possible resource for finding open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. Metadata (information about the theses) comes from over 1100 colleges, universities, and research institutions. OATD currently indexes 5,153,410 theses and dissertations.

The thesis will be made public (parts of it may have already been published as articles in international journals during the PhD). Dissertations from Dutch universities generally meet the highest academic standards and are therefore held in high regard.

A project on the dissertation supported by ProQuest culminated in a workshop held in Washington, D.C. in January 2016. The two-day workshop convened key stakeholders to discuss how emerging technologies and other innovations in doctoral training may shape the Ph.D. dissertation of the future. Presentations were given by graduate deans, publishers, library and information professionals, scholars, and disciplinary representatives.

When the graduate school receives the PhD dissertation, we validate the PhD plan and sends the PhD dissertation to screening for duplicate text. Afterwards, we send the dissertation to the assessment committee by e-mail – the PhD student will be cc. on this e-mail.
The PhD dissertation is submitted in PDF format by e-mail. Before submitting the PhD dissertation, the PhD student has to complete and close the PhD plan.

A candidate must present a dissertation demonstrating original and independent investigation and achievement. A dissertation should reflect not only a mastery of research techniques, but also ability to select an important problem for investigation, and to deal with it competently.
Normally, a dissertation is written in the English language. However, if there are circumstances that warrant a dissertation be written in a foreign language, approval must be received from the Dean of the Graduate School via petition.
